Men get truly excited over “bad” girls. Yeah, the type that looks sultry, suggestive in a very sensual way. They are the trophies rich old men flaunt for the world to see. If you snagged one, you are the man! You are a winner! Everybody else just drool.
But most men do not necessarily fall in love with them. We fall in love with the “good” girl- the wife material, the one we want to spend the rest of our lives with, the one we can never live without. We are constantly searching for that one girl that we want to get lost with- and make us willing to give our freedom up to. Yep, that one person that we are willing to be trapped with, on a small island, in the middle of the Pacific, after a stormy shipwreck!
And that’s where Maine Mendoza made her grand entrance into our hearts.
The dubsmash videos have nothing to do with it, really. The first time we watched it was like oh, another attention seeker, just like the rest of the world, trying to make it big somewhere. Or so, we initially thought. But it all made sense later.
It was when she became Yaya Dub that we immediately sensed the raw honesty of Maine’s personality in the character. Her real emotions shined through. She is not there for the financial benefits of fame but for the realization of an ultimate dream. Her expressions are very revealing- the first time she saw Alden was looking, her eyes sparkled and grew big, she dropped her guard down and revealed the sweetest smile, the purest face a thousand ships would launch for. A few times her jaw dropped and she fell into a convulsive, very animated excitement. When she got the flowers and chocolate the first time, when she was handed the teddy bear and when she saw Alden kiss her standee, she was unable to hold back her thrill! She can’t get as real as that.
Very subtle expressions of candidness make her really endearing. We especially fall for those very slight animations, the little head twitches, the spontaneous contortion of her face, the little flaring of her nose whenever she‘s getting into a certain mood. And then there’s her eyes! By God, I could swear there’s something in them that just melts the bejesus out of any hardened heart!
And we stalk. Realtalk.
We find ourselves scouring the Internet for anything and everything about her. We feel a sense of accomplishment finding old photos and videos. It is like trying to get to know her well, without actually taking her out on a real date. We find ourselves smiling, laughing, crying over things we see and read about her. We become very involved- the infatuation has now become an obsession!
The attraction, not surprisingly, is not really sexual. Don’t get me wrong. Maine is most definitely, seriously, very sexually attractive! But this is not the primary reason why we fall head over heels. And contrary to popular beliefs that we usually try to take advantage if we find out that a girl is attracted to us, most of us do get a genuine thrill on knowing somebody is taking an interest- and we do find ourselves actually trying to reciprocate.
In reality, we identify ourselves with Alden Richards. We want to be THAT guy, the one that Maine Mendoza only has eyes for.
He is not just the man, he is the man’s Man!
And we want him to feel the way we feel, to champion the standards and principles of how real men fall in love- anything less and he becomes the bad guy. That may also be the reason why Kulas wrote the song Hopia- we feel a little angry, frustrated at the thought that Alden is merely there for the art, for the fame- that he is not so much invested in the emotion, despite Maine’s effortless expressions that she is genuinely interested- showing her real vulnerability.
We become very protective.
It is not as much as trying to win her heart from somebody else, but trying to make her feel that if that guy is not that into you, we are here. We get filled with so much emotions that we feel like the knights of old, willing to become violent to protect our one true love! But as soon as we realize that Alden is beginning to show real interest, we back off and cannot but feel happy for Maine. We get back into enjoying the show, confident and very proud that our representative is willing to do everything to get the girl of his dreams, embodying our ideals and intentions the way we expect him to.
There is more to love about Maine. We can never fathom the influence and the effect she has on people, men and women alike. But for us, the male species of this phenomenal fandom, she represents the princess in the attic. The one who live with a secret love hoping to be noticed- silently, patiently waiting for her Prince Charming. And once he finds her, he will never be the same again. He will never be able to let her go. ~ Vilo
Wow… Fantastic baby…

Very well written. We hear & read more about women, young & old alike, shrieking with delight whenever they see Alden on TV. However, not much is written about Maine (note: not Yaya Dub) in much the same light. Perhaps because Maine’s public persona is still shrouded in mystery (i.e. EB’s decision to limit her exposure via interviews). And coming from another member of the male species, this article puts that in perspective. More power to you.

I find Maine to be a fine and classy lady – indeed with breeding. While she shows raw emotions on TV, you can sense that she is using her head. She does not run after Alden Richards, like any other fan would have done in her place.(It would have been so easy for her to get his number and text/call him). I believe she loves her craft and is putting it above whatever she feels. She is a professional. Alden will be crazy to let her go – and yes, if he is not the one, I am sure there are many others willing to be her man. I love this girl.

I am 62 years old and in my entire life have never religiously followed any star or celebrity tandems. This bloggers opinion is quite right. I do not know and can’t explain what is in his girl, Maine. The first time i saw her in EB, even before pairing her with Alden, i was mesmerize, attracted and got myself hooked on her. The most remarkable and heartmelting is whenever she smiles, can’t help myself to admire her. Mind you, she’s not the prettiest nor the most beautiful at all, but she’s so adorable, looks so pure. Do you know what came into my mind now? FHM was right, when they said, “Alden is one lucky dude”. So, for me, though i presume that Maine, really likes him, (Alden), It will be a great loss for him, if he will let go off Maine. I am one who’ll say, Maine is a rare breed.

Their family really supports them and i can tell that they are good people. It is right GOD GAVE ME YOU… They were given to us so as eat bulaga to bring back the old culture we had because now a days teens are so agressive and does not know their limitations that may result to unfortunate future.

Yes, call it stalking. The more I get to know about her, the more I wish that she fulfill her dreams and aspirations. This blog post brought tears. I love Maine like i’m her older sister, a sister who’s proud of her achievements, a sister who wants to protect her from heartaches (if ever Alden is just doing all this for show), a sister who wants to bond with this really cool persona.
Like some of those who admire Maine, I was never the one who shrieks over any celebrity or loveteam, but AlDub’s impact is so powerful, and I give more credit to the personality of Maine.
I wish I had a life similar to hers when I was 20. Right now, at my age, the best thing I can do is to have the pleasure of “kilig moments” amidst a life with real problems. That little luxury of escape from the real world is enough to get me going. Ganyan ang impact nila, and I hope they know it 😊

I’m 40, female and married, and doesn’t really watch TV shows, but when i saw Maine once while my husband was browsing the TV i got hooked i felt the kiligs and unexplained emotions as the others felt. But sometimes i felt pity for Maine when i think of Alden not reciprocating her feelings but i think Alden is slowly and finally realizing who, what and why suddenly Maine appeared in his life. Their love story hopefully will be as epic as the ones i love to read in the novels.

Nakakabahala na din kasi kahit nasa trabaho, I still find a way to watch it via live streaming. 😦

Shared this with my officemate and had a very good discussion about Maine. We’re in our late 30s and never had the time nor interested to follow any celebrity until Maine “happened”. Like probably all female followers who are older than she is, we feel the need to be like mother hens and doting “ates” and one of our fears is that Alden is just doing his job to entertain the audience and will not be able to return Maine’s seemingly genuine feelings. But I personally feel that Alden had somehow forgot to keep his guard up in certain episodes and we have had a sneak peak of what maybe considered real emotions. Let’s see where this journey will take these two. Just one thing for sure, if Alden ever breaks Maine’s heart, I hope he knows that we lionesses do not think twice when we make the kill. *pabebe wink*

as with everybody else, i also got teary eyed reading your thoughts about Maine…we have the same feeling here…i never thought i could be into a celebrity, but with Maine, i just threw caution to the wind, so to speak. I am into my 50’s and a professional, so you could just understand how much I have to protect my image as a person that should have no business dealing with mundane things such as celebrities, etc. But with Maine coming into our lives, my world changed. I am glued to the TV whenever EB is on. I have become a FB and Twitter guy just so I could follow everything about aldub especially Maine. I think I am now her stalker hahaha. And mind you, from doing a regular morning jog for the past 20 years, I could no longer do that for these past two months since Aldub was born, since I would always stay up late until 1am just so I could catch up with any news/updates about this phenomenon. My daily life has changed drastically. Like you, i would browse every news/snippets about Maine or aldub for that matter. My day is not complete if I cannot read anything about her or aldub. Good morning , with due honour to you Mr. Vilo, I really thank you for sharing this with us, you got it all Sir (*handsdown*), I think most men who stalked, watched, and read about her do feel the same like you.
Actually, I’m a not-into-avid-fandom kind of guy when it comes to non-rare matter called “love”. But just like you and the other maton, single men, inspired men, ”pa-cool” men, etc. out there…. I found myself fall into this half of AlDub, which is Maine Mendoza.
When I first heard about their tandem on EB Kalyeserye, I got curious who’s this girl which was paired into Alden. I watched a random replay of their Kalyeserye on Youtube and found out that Yaya Dub (Maine Mendoza) was our lately entitled “The Philippine Queen of Dubsmash”.
The dubsmash works of Maine didn’t catch my attention first because I only noticed her on EB Kalyeserye.
To wrap things up, I knew and I feel that Maine shows up in each Kalyeserye episode 10% scripted and 90% real (this is only my gauge).
This is the reason I think why the Phenomenal impact to Filipinos here and overseas can’t be stopped right now and so on. The charm of Maine to people, her act of humility, striking-yet-modest expressions, brilliant eyes feelings and smiles towards Alden (which were caught indeed by cameras), beauty inside and out, these are the simplest things an ideal woman can have in order to melt every Filipino Men’s heart. This why I became more interested to know about her like any other guys out there. Hehe.
Maine and Alden is a good tandem, not only in Screen for sure, with God’s Phenomenal events such as what they are having right now, They will be a true to life partners bounded with Love soon and ”Forever”.

Spread the love around- that’s our weapon of choice. If that don’t work, then I have a few ideas that involve calibers and leads- Just kidding! Haha!

I love this article! Woman here.Got me teary eyed. I am much closer to my kuyas and male friends so I really understand how you guys feel and actually I really feel the same way. I become so emotional when I watch the videos. I am happy that Alden is taking things seriously now and I hope they will end up together and not hurt our princess. I have never been a fan of any love team before but this genuine emotions that they show makes me believe that true love exist.

Dude, you just nailed it. Every ideas I have for Maine, you put it into words. Every bit of this article represents how I feel for her. Seriously I got chills while reading this. Hope we(men) stay beside Maine through her rough times. We swear an oath to protect her right? ^o^ Truly amazing read.

Nice article! Very nice! I think Alden is jus beingt realistic at first. He was always warned on the “actingan lang to huy”. But he has something with Maine. He kept lang. We will not able to see aldub if he was not there. He responded since day 1. Started with a joke to a script and now true feelings are developing. Thanks for the article! Love it!
